This week’s digest features three interesting papers. I would like to thank all reviewers for their diligent and continuing service to The Electrochemical Society, which made these publications possible.

 

How does the presence of SO2 in air impact LSCF performance? This article presents a combination of thermodynamic analysis and experimental studies to address the effect of low concentrations of SO2 (0.01 ppm) in air on the performance of LSCF electrodes as a function of operating temperature. The concentration of 0.01 ppm is on the order of an average SO2 content in a real environmental condition for practical SOFC tests. They observed that the degradation of LSCF performance is more severe at lower operating temperatures than high ones. The authors suggested that the sulfur poisoning behavior to LSCF at 0.01 ppm SO2 is mainly governed by two processes, the chemical reactions in the vicinity of air inlet and the electrochemically enhanced reactions in the active region. The former is strongly enhanced by temperature, whereas the latter leads to the performance degradation. (Contact author: Riyan Budiman at budiman.riyan@aist.go.jp)
